Ring resizing

You may want to resize your ring for different reasons. You may have provided the wrong ring size or may have miscalculated the ring size of your significant other when purchasing an engagement ring.

We ask that our customers make every effort to provide their correct ring sizes when making any order. You can make use of Madewear’s ring sizer guide here to help determine your correct ring size. Also, double-check to ensure you have the correct size.

However, if you would still like to resize your ring, we can help. Most rings can easily be resized up or resized down but some rings made with certain metals or complicated designs cannot be resized at all. Here is everything you need to know about resizing your ring.

Resizing Down

Resizing down reduces the size of your ring. During this process, the jeweller cuts out the extra material from the bottom of the ring, then solders the ends back together.

925 Sterling silver$25 / £20
9k / 14k / 18K/ Yellow, White and Rose Gold$60 / £50 **(This price is subject to change depending on the size of the ring)
Platinum$95 / £85 **(This price is subject to change depending on the size of the ring)
Resizing Up

A resizing up increases the size of your ring. This is needed if the original size is too small for your finger. There are two known methods used for a resizing up.

  • The first method is where an extra piece of material is added at the bottom of the ring to increase its size. This method can resize a ring up to 2 sizes larger. You will have to pay for the purchase of the extra material and craftsmanship.
  • The second method is where the ring band is stretched to increase its size. This process however, thins out the ring and weakens it. This process can only be done on some selected ring bands and can only resize the ring half a size larger.

Rings that can be resized

Platinum Ring

Platinum rings are toughest to work with. It requires more time and different set of tools and burning gas. Therefore, it’s the most expensive to resize.

Yellow Gold Ring

Yellow gold rings are less costly to resize. The gold is soft and easy to work with. And it only needs to be soldered and polished.
White Gold Ring

White gold rings cost more in material but they’re easier to work with than platinum. White gold rings have a layer of rhodium plating that will come off when melted. So the ring will have to be re-plated with rhodium.

Sterling Silver Ring

Sterling silver rings are easier and less expensive to resize depending on the ring design.

Rings that cannot be resized

Delicate Gemstone

If your ring is mounted with a gemstone or has small gemstones in the band, they may need to be taken off during resizing and reset. Gemstones are more sensitive to heat than diamonds.

Eternity Bands

Eternity rings have a circle of small pavé stones all around the ring. These rings are custom-made and almost impossible to resize. Doing so will damage the perfect continuity of the stones.

Rose Gold Ring

Rose gold comes in many different tones (some more red, and some more gold). So a jeweler may not be able to match the exact tone of your ring. It’s best to go back to the same retailer for resizing. Rose gold is also more delicate, so it can crack more easily during resizing.

Tension Rings

Diamonds in tension settings aren’t mounted in prongs; rather, they’re held in place by a perfect pressure. Tension rings need to be custom-made also. If resized, the structural strength that holds the diamond in place is compromised.

Stainless Steel, Tungsten & Titanium Rings

Rose gold comes in many different tones (some more red, and some more gold). So a jeweler may not be able to match the exact tone of your ring. It’s best to go back to the same retailer for resizing. Rose gold is also more delicate, so it can crack more easily during resizing.
